Adventures in Business: What do you do again?
In an ongoing series titled Adventures in Business, I will be sharing my thoughts as a business owner. Recently, I have been looking for ways to develop my business. We doubled in staff over the last year, and now it’s time to focus on improving sales. My ideas and opinions reflect the lessons I’ve learned over the last 4 years with Immerge.
I want to preface that I wasn’t always the vice president business owner type. I actually began my career with Immerge in production work, handling all Web design and project management. It’s great to have such talented people like Nicole and Chris take over those responsibilities, and I have been able to focus on administering and developing the business.
What you offer
In any good business, you need to have a clear vision of what you are offering, so you can clearly present what you do. Are you are a services company, a product company or a hybrid of the two. I think Immerge is a hybrid. Can you present what you do in 10 words or less with confidence and clarity?
We provide services as solutions providers to small businesses and the government, but we have opportunity with many of our solutions to establish a product, or at least the framework for one.
Spin-offs
The idea is to take what you already have within your business and find more customers who would want the exact or one-off services. Asking your customers what they need is a great way to start.
We emphasize the personal customization to fit someone’s work flow rather than force them to fit into someone else’s preconceived notions of their product. An example within Immerge is our CMS solution.
Opportunities Arise from Experience
Our
ImmergeCMS product was forged with the purpose of giving small businesses more control of their Website and then extending the solution with extensions specific to the customer’s business. The features we put into our CMS were the most popularly asked for. What have you learned that would help your customers?
BotkinRose needed a way to easily manage and present their lawyers. We made a simple administrative interface to add lawyers and their info and to automatically add them to the navigation. We’ve called this package the “Professional Package” since the feature could work for any small business online staff listing.
